Michael Buble Crazy Love (2009)

Michael Buble Crazy Love (2009)
The album was recorded over a period of six months in Los Angeles, New York, and Vancouver (his hometown). Produced by David Foster, Bob Rock and Humberto Gatica, Michael Bublé describes Crazy Love as the "ultimate record about the inevitable roller coaster ride of relationships."
The first single, "
Haven't Met You Yet," written by Bublé, Alan Chang and Amy Foster (former collaborators), was released on August 31st, 2009. Weeks prior to this single, Bublé offered his audience an early glimpse at Crazy Love with a "playful" remix of "Baby (You Got What It Takes)".
The album was named for
Northern Irish musician Van Morrison's 1970 song, "Crazy Love", with a cover version included.
Bublé commented on the recording process for the album: "I started this record knowing I was going to record it differently than my previous ones. I dug way deeper and was more introspective on this one. Basically, I sang the truth - made each song autobiographical - and you can definitely hear the difference. I went back to the way my idols made their records. I wanted an organic feel - so people could feel like they were in the studio with me. The musicians and I all sat in the room, recorded it right from the floor and we let the sounds all come together and bleed into one another. It's not contrived. Not too perfect. It just feels really good.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
15 minutes into the film, the kid turns to me and says "I'm sorry I made you see this". I say "Oh, it's okay. We're at the movies together, having fun!"; he didn't believe my acting any more than he did that awful woman who's trying her best, apparently, to fake 3 different English accents (or was one of them Australian) and pretend she's enjoying being on screen in this TURD.30 minutes into the film: I'm wishing I had a cellphone, so I could call in a bomb threat and get the theater emptied.45 minutes into the film: I go to the bathroom. Theatre-hop into the middle of Mamma Mia. No kidding. Stay there for about 5 minutes (during the "Does Your Mama Know" number. Seen it twice; love it.60 minutes into the film: Discover the kid has fallen asleep. We're at a 5 pm showing, by the way.75 minutes into the film: I have the worst luck in theatres; if there's a crying baby, his parents will sit immediately behind me. If there's a person whose hearing was damaged by too much disco, he'll sit beside me and shout questions at his wife or boyfriend through the whole thing. You know; things like this have made me spend the money and buy a home theater with 9' screen. I still love going to the theater, however. Anyway, when the 4 year old that sits near us starts talking in his "outside voice" to his obviously deaf Grandma and Pa (or is it Great-Grandma and Pa), instead of yelling "Shut UP!" like I normally do, I start listening to HIM; it's actually more entertaining.90-something minutes into the film: Now, I'm no longer wishing for the cellphone and have gone straight to wishing I had an actual bomb, so I could get the theater emptied out.The End of the Film: the bedraggled audience weakly applauds the fact that it's over. No kidding. I hear people leaving, saying things like "maybe we can get our money back", and "That SUCKED". I've never heard things like that on exit from a movie like this before, and I see a LOT of movies. The kid apologizes again. I say "You OWE me. Big Time." He says "I'm soooo sorry this sucked so bad".Did you get that, moviemaker sellouts? An 11 year old kid! Loves Star Wars, James Bond, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc. YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE. And your movie is SO bad, he feels GUILTY about me spending our money to see it! Where can I send this bill I've created for having my intelligence insulted by Mario Bello, a beautiful woman who's apparently never even HEARD of England? Maybe it's not her fault. Maybe her family has B-S'd her all her life, telling her how she sounds "just like those Harry Potter movies" or something. Pathetic is not a word that comes close. I'll have to create a new one: Skantasticalistically Snarxious. Trust me. Burn your money. Don't even go to it thinking you'll be able to make fun of it, like Rocky Horror. Let's all pitch in and bury this deep, like you're supposed to do with rotting corpses.

Fast and Furious (2009)

Fast and Furious (2009)
2 Furious and Tokyo Drift... I'm sure this had something to do with Justin Lin directing Tokyo Drift as well as Fast & Furious. I'm glad that he made it happen that way because I am sure there were many people that saw Tokyo Drift and thought, "Where did this movie come from?" It was so random to have it be a Fast and Furious movie when it had nothing to do with either of the original 2 with the exception of the again, random, cameo of Dom at the end of it. In the first couple of scenes of Fast & Furious you see that Han is part of Dom's crew that hi-jacks gas tankers in the Dominican Republic. When the heat is on Dom once again, he tells Han it's time to go do his own thing. Han tells him that he hears of some things going on in Tokyo. If you recall in Tokyo drift, Han tells Sean that Tokyo is his "Mexico" he was running to stay out of jail.I really enjoyed this movie. The plot wasn't as detailed as the previous but it followed along well with what you think might happen in a Fast & Furious movie... Paul Walker plays Brian O'Conner again, he is still working law enforcement, although this time he is big boy FBI. Vin Deisel is back as Dominic Toretto. He and Brian are trying to get in with a drug ring for different reasons, but team up to help each other get what they are after. The movie is full of everything you expect from the franchise: Nice cars, great racing, hot women and hot guys (to suit everyone's taste) This movie has great action sequences as well. I recommend this movie to anyone that has followed the other 3... or at least the first 2. If they make a 5th one I'll be first in line to see it too.

The Proposal (2009)

The Proposal (2010)
The thing with The Proposal was you could predict the ending AND predict some events that would be happening throughout the film and some of the main problems were cliché, but I wasn't basing my opinions on this movie to be,"Is it going to be predictable, because if it is, I won't like it!" No, I wasn't like that, because I knew this film was going to be predictable here and there, but I was looking to see if they made it enjoyable and at least brought some fresh, new material to the table, which they certainly did that! I thought some scenes were just so wonderfully done and the whole movie itself was constructed perfectly for the type of movie that it is.I had a really good time watching The Proposal and thought it was great entertainment with insanely lovable characters; I wanted to shriek with joy every time I saw Grandma Annie; a lot of incredibly humorous scenes at times, my favorites were when Margaret and Grandma Annie were dancing to the spirits which got the biggest laughs out of any part of the movie from me and when the dog was picked up by an eagle and Margaret was chasing it around trying to get her phone back; BOTH HYSTERICAL, and some questionable, yet sweet and charming dialogue; Near the end in the office was cute and original, and the credits were funny as well with the dialogue in them. This movie while being cliché, as I've stated many times, did still pack a very powerful punch and made me laugh, cry and enjoy it tremendously, so therefore it succeeded in what it was meant to do in the first place and that was to entertain. I loved it for the light-hearted, pleasant and fun comedy that it is....

Paranormal.Activity

For writer-director Oren Peli, home is where the horror is.

Literally.

“Paranormal Activity” was photographed at Peli’s home during a seven-day sprint in 2006 with a crew of three that included co-producers Toni Taylor, Peli’s then-girlfriend, and Amir Zbeda, one of the filmmaker’s best friends.

Peli, whose name means “wonder” or “marvel” in Hebrew, is a native of Israel who dropped out of school there when he was sixteen to start his own software company. Three years later, he and Zbeda emigrated to the U.S., where Peli developed animation and video game programs.

After meeting Taylor and deciding to settle down, Peli went house-hunting during the height of the real estate boom. After being outbid on several houses, they finally managed to land a suburban tract home. “It was the first time I’d ever lived in a house; I’d only ever rented small apartments,” says Peli. “In quiet suburbia, I quickly learned that you become conscious of every little noise, especially at night.

“The house, or the ground around it, was settling; things were falling off shelves in the middle of the night,” he continues. “I’m not saying there was a ghost or anything, because the incidents, or whatever you would call them, were happening months apart.”

And for the next couple of years those nighttime noises – however intermittent – persisted.

“It all got the techno-geek side of me thinking, ‘Maybe it would be cool to set up video cameras as a way to figure out what was going on,’” Peli says with a grin. “If those cameras caught something good, I thought that could make a pretty interesting movie.”

Once he had written a script, Peli and Taylor decided it was time to make some long-needed home improvements. The couple put in new wood flooring, hung some pictures on the walls and rearranged their bedroom. They even constructed the Ouija board that plays a central role in the narrative.

At a marathon casting session in Hollywood, which yielded 150 aspirants, Peli discovered Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat. “They were among the very few actors we saw who slid right into character when we threw them our standard question, which was ‘So tell me why you think your house is haunted?’

“When we put Katie and Micah together, they were absolutely convincing as a couple that had been together for years,” Peli continues. “They were telling stories about their vacations, talking about how Katie’s mom didn’t approve of them living together. They came up with elaborate backstories for their characters on the spot. That was the moment when I actually green-lighted the movie in my head, because I wasn’t going to do it unless I could find actors who could pull it off.”

Peli’s overall goal was to come up with footage that would “feel very organic – I didn’t want the actors to worry about lighting or camera angles or anything like that. At the same time I didn’t want it to look bad. It was all about the performances and not distracting the actors with filmmaking issues.”

The exception is the static shot that’s established when Micah sets up the camera on a tripod in his bedroom. “I’d worked on that shot for months,” Peli explains. “I was playing with all different types of lighting; it had to be natural. You need to be able to barely see what’s happening in the bedroom while still maintaining a degree of clarity for the audience.”

Capturing the action outside of his character’s bedroom would be up to Sloat who, as it turned out, had been a camera operator for his college TV station. “He framed the shots well – sometimes too well – and I would have to ask him to close the viewfinder and just point and shoot,” Peli recalls with a laugh.

Although Peli felt that Micah and Katie needed very little direction, he set some rules: improvisation is okay, but don’t use each others’ names in vain, and no forced exposition.

Peli applied similar rules of naturalism to sound and production design.

“As is the case with films like ‘The Blair Witch Project’ and ‘Open Water,’ I wanted there to be only a little bit of blood in the movie. That’s the way I like scary movies; you don’t have to go over the top. In the same way, I wanted the sound effects to be subtle. We establish the drone of the room tone and then we document a low-frequency rumble, which is really all you need. The fact that we have a lot of scenes in the movie that are totally quiet forces the audience to be quiet and really pay attention to every little thing. Silence only emphasizes that little tap on the wall you know is not supposed to be there.”

Production was so stealthy, Peli notes, the neighbors never knew he was making a movie. Nor, really, did anyone else.

After just seven days of shooting, with support from Taylor and Zbeda, who contributed everything from story ideas to props to stunt design and execution, Peli loaded the footage into Sony Vegas editing software on his home PC.

He submitted “Paranormal Activity” to Screamfest, a boutique festival for cult and homemade horror held each October at the legendary Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Peli admits today he was “terrified” when Screamfest founder Rachel Belofsky “forced” him to send a DVD of his movie to Steve Barton, editor of the popular horror website Dread Central, which turned out to be a good move: Barton and others at the site were the first to praise “Paranormal Activity” and continued to champion it even after its Screamfest debut.

“It quickly became apparent the community was really embracing the movie,” says Peli. “People were blogging wildly, asking our little website how they could see the film. It was surreal. It got me thinking about ‘Paranormal Activity’ in theatrical terms.”

A few days after the first screening, Peli recalls being approached by all kinds of people from that first audience – men and women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. They all reported having problems sleeping at night, sometimes for several nights. “At first I thought people were just using a figure of speech to describe a scary movie,” Peli says. “But reports of sleeplessness have persisted after every screening since.”

The Screamfest screening helped Peli find an agent at CAA and a subsequent berth at Slamdance. It also attracted the attention of Steven Schneider, an academic-turned-producer whose numerous books on the horror genre brought him to Hollywood in 2003.

Schneider recalls pulling a DVD of “Paranormal Activity” from a pile of submissions and watching it at home alone one night. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this director is really asking the audience to experience what this couple is feeling,’” he says. ”But what really hooked me was that first night scene, after Micah puts his camera on a tripod. We've seen a lot of horror movies with gyrating, hand-held camerawork, so that static shot seemed almost subversive. I could tell the filmmaker intuitively knew how to build suspense. Then the movie slowly sucked me in, my sense of dread kept growing, and Oren's very clinical method of filmmaking - along with the naturalism of Katie and Micah's performances - really affected me. I couldn't sleep.”

Schneider shared the movie with producer Jason Blum. Schneider had a deal with Blum’s production company while both were based on the Paramount lot. “I recognized that ’Paranormal Activity’ was a lot like ‘Blair Witch’ in the way that it delivered purely on an audience level,” Blum says. “Both were designed to be theatrical experiences, exercises in terror told with the intimate medium of video, felt viscerally by large groups of strangers united in a darkened room.”

At Slamdance, the film was seen by a young executive from DreamWorks, Ashley Brucks, who recommended it to her boss, Adam Goodman, now president of production at Paramount Pictures.

Paramount Pictures will release the movie this fall, at the same time as Peli begins his next film, an independent thriller called “Area 51,” with Blum aboard as producer and Schneider as executive producer.

“One of the things I wanted to do was create something that people could say defined horror for their generation,” concludes Peli, “the way after ‘Psycho’ people said they would never take another shower; after ‘Jaws’ and ‘Open Water’ that they would never again swim in the ocean; and after ’Blair Witch’ that they would never again go camping in the woods. I figured, well, sleeping at home is something you can’t really avoid. So if I can make people scared of being at home, ‘Paranormal Activity’ might do something.”

Polar Storm (2009)

Polar Storm (2009)

This movie is along the lines of most Sci-Fi Channel movies, but definitely a tad better - mostly because it tackles a different theme (magnetic storms / polar shift) and has a good lead character.

The basic setup of the story is that a fragment of a comet has hit earth and strange electrical storms are popping up in multiple locations. There are two sub-stories: (1) a scientist (Jack Coleman from the TV series "Heroes") tries to warn the government that the storms are going to get worst, not better and (2) the scientist's son and wife are trying to escape an area hit by one of the storms.

One thing that's very impressive is that the story can be effectively told within the budgetary constraints typical to these types of movies. The filmmakers put just the right amount into effects (simple, but passable), locations (small towns/open roads) and the number of characters (very few) to make it work.

Furthermore, Jack Coleman and Holly Dignard (who plays his wife) are decently interesting to watch - so that helps. Both carry an air of seriousness that helps keep the atmosphere of the movie in urgency mode.

If you're sick of the channel's overused themes (mutant undead/rat/insect/etc.), then this is a step up from that. It's not really good or great, but if you're hunting for sci-fi on TV and nothing else is on ... might as well watch this.

Blue - 2009

Blue - 2009

Blue is set in the breath taking sun soaked white sand beaches of Bahamas. Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is an excellent deep sea diver who dreams of getting his own new boat someday while his friend Aarav (Akshay Kumar) is a rich arrogant businessman, whose ego is much larger than the big boats that he owns. The conflict between these two sparring friends is the conflict between the rich and the poor, between the moral and the immoral, between greed and honour...

Caught in between these two is Sagar's brother Sam (Zayed Khan) who has inadvertently managed to rankle a whole gang of mafia men. Now, these dangerous men are after him and Sagar is the only one who can help him. But to save his brother, Sagar has to wrestle with the ghost of his dead father... The only other person who is privy to Sagar's dilemma is Mona (Lara Dutta), his girlfriend. She is afraid that the secret that lies within the restless waters could destroy all their lives.

The adrenaline rush that comes with Blue accelerates as each new chapter unfolds. It begins with a bare handed skirmish with sharks, moves into deep sea diving, reveals the secret of a forbidden treasure and a buried past, flirts with death at the hands of the mafia and goes straight into the treacherous waters again.

A team of the best underwater technicians from around the world - divers, cameramen, and stunt directors are working on the making of Blue to make it as real and as palpable as the medium of cinema can allow, so that the viewer feels engulfed in the entire experience.

Blue - the color of the sky and the color of the seas...Underneath the shimmering beautiful inviting waters of the sea, lurks a secret which threatens to destroy one friend and save the other friend.
